Our Story

Today, anyone stepping into the Sephardic Synagogue of Plainview will feel welcomed into a warm, friendly environment where you can grow in Torah and Mitzvot.

Throughout the holidays, we have special programs to draw young and old to celebrate. We have free classes for adults and children alike to learn and grow.

The congregants have experienced exponential growth through classes on the Parasha, Gemara/Talmud, Hashkafa/Jewish Thought, Halakhah/Jewish Law, Shalom Bayit, Mussar, Family Purity, and Hebrew Language.

Through the services on Shabbat, Holidays, Rosh Chodesh, Sunday mornings, and Shaharits during the summer, congregants have come together to create the Sephardic community in Plainview.

Background

The Sephardic Synagogue of Plainview was born in 1996 to accommodate the growth of the Sephardic community in Plainview. Members of the community saw the need to cultivate and build the Sephardic community in Plainview, as it is remote from other Sephardic communities on Long Island.

Services commenced on Yom Kippur of 5756, and during those services it was clear due to the large turnout that there was potential growth for the Sephardic community. The members of that Minyan quickly seized the opportunity to build the Jewish Future by forming “The Sephardic Synagogue of Plainview” and leased the local community center for services.

Many guest Rabbanim and lecturers were brought to inspire and build the community, causing many families to join the Sephardic Plainview Community and influencing many people to become Shomer Shabbat and scrupulous with their observance of Mitzvot and Torah learning.

As predicted, the community slowly but surely grew and the time came for The Sephardic Synagogue of Plainview to find a new, more permanent home.

To sustain the growth of the community, in 2004, the synagogue purchased a house – 51 Country Drive – through the assistance of donations and a mortgage, with hopes of building a center of Torah, Tefillah, and Community.
